A new, widely used anti-impotence drug that was not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in Kenya has made it possible for men to have a ‘super-pill’, but only if they have undergone the first, and only, standard procedure to receive a prescription for the drug.
Sildenafil, which is the generic name for Viagra, was the first pill to be approved for use in Kenya for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. A special drug company called Medi-Seal produced the medicine. It is made by a team of researchers from the University of Soté-Nairobi, who are now based in South Africa.
Medi-Seal, which has produced the drug, works by ‘stimulating the blood flow to the penis’ to allow for a stronger and longer-lasting erection.
The company is now conducting tests at the Kenya Medical Research Institute to see if the new drug will work.
The drugs will be available to men who have been diagnosed with impotence in the last three months, and who would not have had erectile dysfunction.
The first dose of sildenafil was approved for use by the FDA in 1998. However, it was not until 1999 that a new, standard procedure to receive a prescription for the drug was developed, and the drug became available in Kenya.
Sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis when an erection is made. It has been shown to be effective for up to 36 hours, but only if the patient is sexually stimulated. The drugs will be available to men who have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction in the last three months.
